Sucre, Potosí & the Salt Flats
Sucre & Potosí, and the Salt Flats did not disappoint - a tour from Uyuni to Tupiza.

OMG OMG OMG, it was meeting the parents day. Mike came to Sucre to spend time together and to meet my parents. He bought us breakfast cause he knew we would arrive insanely early (04:00 in the morning) and prepared his nice coffee, which is almost always WAY better than the coffee at the hostels. So good impressions were made, although the nervousness shone through, my mom told me later. We spent the day together exploring Sucre, which was super nice! And now all four of us are at a viewpoint of the city, waiting for the sunset, with a bottle of wine, cheese, and nuts. It’s the best way to end this day. I am really happy right now. It’s like different worlds collide and they’re all mine, how lucky am I?

What a beautiful trail and great marketing from the tour company. We hiked a part of the Inca Trail outside of Sucre, with beautiful mountain views. During lunch, we stopped at a ‘textile factory’. A whole company of one woman weaving a small blanket, who only started working when she noticed that we were gonna sit there for a while. My mom even brought extra money cause we thought she would be able to pick out something nice, like a type of woven backpack we had seen before. But the factory wasn’t what we thought. Yep, great marketing. BUT also a great day and a beautiful area, nevertheless.

I postponed it for as long as I could. But today I couldn’t any longer, cause I finally got the message: ‘the card is full’. So first, I did what anyone would do: delete some photos. That way, I could at least take some pictures on top of the Church. But now, the moment is finally here: I am transferring all the photos to a hard drive. I had bought it in Ecuador, MONTHS ago. But you know, stuff only happens when there is a sense of urgency.
Anyway, we are in Potosí at the moment, after a smooth bus ride, and it is such a nice city! Everybody raves about Sucre, but I feel like this city has a lot more character. It feels way more authentic. And the taxi driver, who brought us from the bus station to the hotel, agreed cause he called the people from Sucre: ‘Los Locos’.

We were so excited to spend a nice day in Potosí, but we didn’t do any research. It was Sunday, so almost everything was closed. The museum we wanted to visit, the churches we wanted to see, the coffee shops where we wanted to relax, the markets we wanted to see - everything was closed. And on top of that, my dad threw up on his pants. Altitude is a bitch. We brought him back to the hotel to rest for a few hours, so luckily, he’s feeling a bit better right now. But other than that, Potosí is a great city! And the local soup with a volcanic rock thrown into it, Khalapurka, was really, really good!

This was just insane! We visited the famous Salt Flats today. For as far as you can see, it’s all white. A shape of mountains in the far distance and a clear blue sky above. This was one of the places I was most excited about visiting. Probably, like almost every other tourist in Bolivia, and seeing it with my own eyes, it did not disappoint! It was just incredible, and because of the immense size, it sometimes still felt like we were the only people there! So grateful I got to experience this with my parents. It’s one of the most beautiful and impressive places in the WORLD. And I am here, with my parents. What a crazy life.
But of course: a picture is worth a thousand words. So here, for the value of 4000 words.

Oh my god, look at all those flamingos! I have never seen this many this close in the wild. And not at one lake. No. At every lake we drive past! Flamingos everywhere! Also, they don’t stand on one leg here. Every single flamingo stands on two legs. And we have a theory about it: it’s so windy at this high altitude, they will fall if they stand on one leg. So they have to stand on two.
Many flamingos together, Bolivia.

VICUÑA, VICUÑAS, look LLAMAS, more VICUÑAS, LLAMAS. This was basically what you could hear in our car today.
We also visited an active geyser and some more pretty lakes, but the animals excited me the most. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of looking at them. Such interesting creatures.
I am lying in bed and luckily I already feel a little bit better, cause after the hot spring I did NOT feel good. I think the heat, not enough food, and the altitude finally got to me. It still was a great day though, with great views and muchas LLAMAS y VICUÑAS.
